The Hypertherm Powermax85 SYNC plasma cutter with a 50 ft 75° hand torch is a 25-85 A air plasma system for handheld cutting and gouging, rated for a recommended cut of 1 in. (25 mm) at 20 ipm. It runs on 200-480 V single-phase or 200-600 V three-phase power (CSA), and its SmartSYNC torch reads each single-piece cartridge by RFID to set the amperage and operating mode.

Past the recommended rating it cuts 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) at 10 ipm, and a hand-cutting severance cut reaches 1-1/2 in. (38 mm) at 5 ipm. Pierce capacity is 3/4 in. (20 mm) when cutting by hand or with a mechanized torch under programmable height control. For maximum-removal gouging, the typical metal removal rate is 18.2 lbs per hour, with a groove about 0.14 in. deep and 0.26 in. wide. Laser-marked, color-coded cartridges are easy to tell apart by process, and end-of-life detection shows when one needs replacing.

The IGBT inverter power supply is rated 12.2 kW at 143 VDC, and an engine-driven generator needs 20 kW to deliver the full 85 A. Gas can be clean, dry, oil-free air or nitrogen, ideally at 110-120 psi and never below 75 psi. With handles the unit measures 19 x 9.2 x 17 in. (D x W x H), it weighs 67 lbs with a 25 ft torch fitted, and the input power cable is 10 ft long. Electrical efficiency is 91.9%.
