The JET J-A5816 is a 15 in. variable speed floor drill press for 115/230 V single-phase power. A variable-speed motor works with a stepped-pulley system through a continuously variable transmission, so the chuck speed can be set across a wide range and changed while the machine runs.

Speed is dialed in with a hand wheel marked with a scale that matches the machine speed. The wheel drives reduction gearing that shifts the ratio between the fixed pulley on the motor and the variable pulley on the output shaft, which sets the chuck speed and gives the operator precise control. A tensioner pulley in the belt drive takes up or releases belt slack as the speed changes.
