The Miller Maxstar 400 is a compact DC TIG/stick welder with a 3-400 A range that welds steel up to 5/8 in. thick. Auto-Line input connects to single- or three-phase power from 208 to 600 V, high-speed DC TIG pulse reaches 5000 pulses per second, and the 126 lb machine has a standard lift eye.

Pulsing at high speed steadies the arc, cuts heat input and warpage and can raise travel speed, with peak amperage, peak time and background amperage all adjustable, and QuietPulse reshapes the DC pulse waveform to keep noise down. Blue Lightning provides non-contact high-frequency arc starts, DC TIG (GTAW) gives a smooth, precise arc on exotic materials, and a 120 V auxiliary receptacle can run the cooling system or small tools.

Setup is handled by an LCD with on-screen explanations, Pro-Set presets, Locks and Limits for staying within the welding procedure specification (WPS), nine independent program memories and a USB port for updates, backups and program transfers. Stick (SMAW) work gets DIG arc control and adaptive Hot Start. The package includes an 8 ft (2.4 m) primary cord and two 50 mm Dinse-style connectors, and running gear is optional. Applications include industrial welding, process pipe and stainless steel.
